Excellent parking service for Co-Op’s customers with Nedap SENSIT wireless vehicle detection sensors

- Pontac, Jersey, Channel Islands

A.G.K. Ltd., supplier of Parking Guidance Information (PGI) Systems, has recently completed a successful trial installation of the Nedap’s vehicle detection system SENSIT to optimize parking bay monitoring in Pontac, Jersey, in the Channel Islands.

The new system consists of wireless sensors to detect vehicle occupancy in each single bay. This installation at a small but very busy surface parking facility serves the Co-Op Locale store at Pontac to manage the increasing problem of overstay parking at this facility. As a service to customers of the store, the car park provides free parking for up to one hour, but this was being increasingly abused by non-customers, thus preventing legitimate customers from availing of the limited parking at this facility.

Facilities Manager for Channel Islands Co-op, Mr. Warwick Cooper, explains that: “The overstay parking feature of the SENSIT system as an invaluable tool in our enforcement of the parking controls at this car park to ensure that the limited parking spaces are not being abused by commuters and other non-store customers.”

The SENSIT system involves the installation of dual-technology sensors, using both infra-red and magnetic detection, in each of the car parking spaces to monitor occupancy and length of stay. Overstay incidents are highlighted via an alarm on the operator software, which can be accessed both locally and remotely, to enable effective and timely enforcement of the parking regulations.

The new system went live at the end of July 2011 and has proven very successful in reducing the incidence of overstays, thereby freeing up the parking spaces for customers of the store.
